NICE (''N''ear-''I''nfrared ''C''ross-dispersed ''E''chelle spectrograph) is a near-infrared echelle spectrograph, which covers the wavelength range from 0.9 to 2.5 μm with four exposures and has a wavelength resolution of λ/Δλ ~ 2600 (in the case of 0.5" slit width with the TAO telescope). These capabilities enable us to simultaneously evaluate the continuum level and intensity of various lines of a spectrum with high accuracy over a wide wavelength range.

The University of Tokyo Atacama Observatory (TAO) project is to construct a 6.5 m infrared telescope at the summit of Co. Chajnantor (Alt. 5640 m) in Chile, promoted by Institute of Astronomy, the University of Tokyo. With a combination of a dry climate and high altitude of the site, atmospheric windows from near-infrared to sub-mm wavelengths become accessible.

NICE will be installed on the TAO telescope as the first generation instruments.
