"IFU spectroscopy of SN sites: constraining progenitor mass & metallicity"
The progenitors of supernovae are still not well understood despite the large
number of observed events. This problem can be resolved by studying the parent
stellar population present at the supernova explosion site. Integral field
spectroscopy of nearby core-collapse supernova sites has been obtained using
UH88/SNIFS and Gemini-N/GMOS in 2010-2011. Metallicity and age of the parent
stellar populations have been derived, providing strong constraints on progenitor
metallicity and initial mass. It was found that supernovae type Ic might be produced
by progenitors which are more massive and metal rich compared to supernova type Ib
progenitors, while type II supernovae are probably produced by stars from wide range
of initial mass encompassing Ib/c progenitor mass. Indication of binary channel
in the production of supernova Ib/c in addition to single star scenario is also
found, further strengthening the contemporary notion of the existence of both
single and binary Ib/c progenitors.
