近傍銀河の約半数は渦巻銀河に分類される。
しかし、渦巻構造の起源や維持機構・寿命などについては、
50年以上議論が続いているにもかかわらず、統一的な見解が得られていない。
そこで今回は、分子ガスのトレーサーであるCO輝線観測をもとにした、
2つの研究結果を紹介する。

1つめは、星の質量分布と分子＋原子ガスの質量分布のピーク位置のずれ
（=offset）の銀河円盤内での変化である。
理論計算により、腕構造が長寿命（1Gyr程度）である場合には、
このずれが銀河中心からの距離やガスの自己重力の強さに依存すると
考えられるが、近傍渦巻銀河M51で測定したoffsetには、
そのような依存性は見られなかった。
その結果、M51の腕構造は数百Myr程度の時間で変化していると考えられる。

2つめは、COとHαのピーク位置のずれから
腕構造のパターン速度と星形成時間を推定する手法（offset法）である。
12の近傍渦巻銀河にこの手法を適用した結果、
5つの銀河でパターン速度と星形成時間を決定できた。
星形成時間は数〜数十Myrであることから、星形成過程においては
分子雲の自己重力が重要であると考えられる。

*** Title: The Southern African Large Telescope [#x9d6fcd4]

The Southern African Large telescope (SALT) is the largest single telescope
in the southern hemisphere.Its primary mirror comprises 91 hexagonal segments,
each 1 metre across, giving an effective collecting diameter of 9.2 metre.
SALT is owned by a number of international partners, of which South Africa
is the largest shareholder. I will introduce the telescope, some of its
unusual features, and the current suite of instruments. I will finish
with some examples of recent science completed with SALT.
